In order to promote traditional lacquer crafts, we attempt to apply lacquer crafts to articles that are favored by young people from their angle of view. By combining skateboards of the street popular culture with the unique phenomena on streets in Taiwan, these phenomena are reinterpreted by paintings of dark humor. The unique effects of lacquer crafts are utilized to create lacquerwares of modern styles in order to present Taiwanese culture. The purpose is to make lacquer crafts popular among groups of young people so that the lacquer culture can be continued and inherited.
In the first stage, we selected 5 types of Taiwanese culture from the local street culture including cigarette culture, queue culture, catering culture, Tai-Ker culture, and betel nut girl culture for data collection. The story of each culture is created from the data that is collected. The features of each culture are highlighted by the characteristics or appearance of the roles in each story that is presented in the style of traditional Chinese painting. The goal is to create a style that belongs to the unique Taiwanese street culture.
What is lacquerware?
The lacquer on a ‘lacquerware’ is collected from the white resins that a lacquer tree bleeds. The resin is also called ‘raw lacquer’.
By applying layers of raw lacquer or color lacquer to the surface of a lacquerware, this technique provides an article with a protective film and also makes the article brighter and sleeker.
